“The computer system is making the piece,” Smith adds. “It’s drawing on all its cached data and sharing that information. It’s given us notes, text, ideas about dances. It’s trying to make art.  As computers become more intelligent, they are trying to become better at their own creativity.”. “Six Degrees of Freedom” shows a computer system that anxiously confronts an unforeseen force that demands it must construct an evening-length dance performance. The finished result is a broad assemblage of choreography, video projections, and scattered ephemera, seemingly familiar and yet always slightly off. Whether you’re a dance aficionado or a hard-core techie, Smith and Wymore’s reputation for witty, physically provocative, intellectually stimulating, and deeply-felt work is calibrated to satisfy everyone.

In his decades-long career as a clown, Jeff Raz has performed for an audience of one and in front of thousands, but he approaches each performance with the same goal in mind. “When I play different venues, I have to make sure I connect with my purpose for being there,” he says. Besides entertaining audiences, his upcoming appearances in Tandy Beal and Company’s “Joy!” serve the purpose of reuniting him with Diane Wasnak. The two clowns worked together in the Pickle Family Circus as Pino and Raz, and they’ll be bringing some of their old magic to San Jose’s Hammer Theatre Center Dec. 1-3.

“Some material Diane and I haven’t done for 15 years,” Raz says, “Some of it will be brand-new.”, Raz worked with Beal when she was choreographer and then director for the Pickle Family Circus, “When Tandy calls, I say ‘yes’ and then I check my schedule,” Raz says, “I love working with her, “Tandy’s built a large community between dancers, clowns and musicians,” he adds, “She’s been committed to making an artistic community (throughout) her whole career, She stays in touch with groups ballet slippers essie of people and puts them together in surprising combinations.”..

Beal debuted one such combination last year in a holiday show in San Jose. As did that show, “Joy!” features a cappella group SoVoSo, who will accompany the performers with original songs and seasonal favorites. “To do a juggling act with them is like being in a really big beanbag chair that’ll move and shake to anything you do,” Raz says. “They’re musical improvisors, so they’re absolutely tuned in to every sound around. Clowns are theatrical improvisors, so it fits.”. Raz didn’t have much room for improvisation when he played the Dead Clown, the principal character in Cirque du Soleil’s “Corteo,” 10 years ago.

“I did 500 performances of the same show, (but) on any given night, there are folks seeing it for the first time, My job is to make sure I connect with everyone here.”, He faces a different ballet slippers essie challenge when he makes visits to children and dementia patients with the Medical Clown Project, an organization that provides therapeutic medical clowning at Bay Area hospitals and care facilities, “Everything is immediate,” says Raz, who serves as the project’s board president, “My new skill is how to adjust to this person and meet their needs.”..

He points out that the Medical Clown Project in Brazil has theater directors shadow the performers and collaborate on a play about their experience in hospitals. “One of our jobs is to spread knowledge of the beauty and the hard things in hospitals, which I love but haven’t been able to do—yet.”. Raz says doing hard things you love is essential to being a clown. He taught that mindset to his students at the Clown Conservatory, a training program he founded in San Francisco in 2000. “When I ran the Clown Conservatory, I found over and over again that the folks who did great were not the folks who necessarily had talent; they had the willingness to do the work,” Raz says. “Greatness means going back and doing it again and again and again.”.
