“Grease” is a curious concoction. Now enjoying a Contra Costa Musical Theatre revival at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, the 1971 musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey is a celebration (and approximation) of 1950s rock and roll and youth culture. Like TV’s “Happy Days,” it’s an exercise in nostalgia for an idealized version of the 1950s that ignores the many oppressive aspects of the period, such as segregation and McCarthyism. “Grease” takes a somewhat less sanitized view of teen culture than some other faux ’50s specimens, with a whole lot of smoking and drinking and casual sex.
