“Always the goal has been to present the evolution and wealth of Cuban music,” De Marcos says. “Sometimes the presentation is more jazzy, sometimes more traditional, sometimes more classical, and sometimes more contemporary. I change the lineup every three or four years, and the challenge is to find musicians who are going to be ready to do what I want to do at the moment.”. He captured the band’s full range and power on last year’s double album “Absolutely Live II” (DM Ahora! Productions), which features a CD “Viva Mexico!,” recorded at the Cervantino International Festival in Guanajuato, and a Blu-ray disc “Live in Maryland,” drawn from a performance at the Strathmore Center for the Arts in North Bethesda, Maryland.

For the Afro-Cuban All-Stars’ Freight & Salvage debut, concerts that are part of the venue’s Raices series curated by percussionist John Santos, De Marcos is presenting the band’s latest incarnation, It’s a lineup that’s particularly close to his heart, as it includes his wife, percussionist Gliceria Abreu, and their daughters Gliceria González (vibraphone, percussion and vocals) and Laura Lydia González (Bb clarinet and bass clarinet), Bass clarinet and vibes aren’t often heard in Cuban roots and popular music, mens two tone dance shoes but the All Stars seamlessly integrate the expanded instrumental palette. “You write your own arrangements in Afro-Cuban,” De Marcos says, “People are expecting us to play some classic songs, some standards, so we mix my arrangements and compositions with classic son and some compositions by band members.”..

Traveling with a long-serving sound engineer, the band also maintains old-school values when it comes to dynamics. Amplifying brass and percussion is something of a lost art, and the All-Stars take pains to “mix the music on stage so the audience can hear everything and we can hear each other,” De Marcos says. “I remember the old bands, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Omara Portuondo. When Lester Young took a tenor sax solo, everyone played quietly and it sounded beautiful.”.

There’s so much vertical construction happening in downtown San Jose of late that it would have probably made Dutch Hamann, the city’s onetime Sultan of Sprawl, burst a mens two tone dance shoes blood vessel, But far too often the builders have managed to double down on the necessary blight of a construction site with an unnecessary one: Bland, blank plywood walls that shield the site — and its dust, rock and sparks — from the tender gaze of the passing pedestrian or motorist, You know who loves those walls? Taggers..

But Chris Enders, the development manager at Core Companies, had a different idea for the Sparq housing development that Core is building at First and Reed streets, at the southern end of San Jose’s arty SoFA District — and it’s one that every developer working on a downtown site should copy. Enders saw that the wall wasn’t bringing anything positive to the street, so he teamed up with San Jose artists Francisco Ramirez and Ana Gonzalez to create a colorful, provocative mural for the block-long wall. The mural — emblazoned with “SOFA: A Sparq of Creativity,” is a little weird and mystical with a nod to both tech and street art — so it’s perfect for the South First Area.  And while it hasn’t been entirely free of tags, the wall has fared a lot better than its blank cousins elsewhere.

“Inspiration came by observing the growth of our community,” said Ramirez, who also recently created a stunning mural in an entirely different style for Good Karma Bikes on Lincoln Avenue, “It sparked our minds into beautifying the city by creating an infusion of technology with artistic design.”, STANDING WITH DR, KING: The Mulitcultural Arts Leadership Institute in San Jose will mens two tone dance shoes again be declaring solidarity with marginalized communities and countering hate with art on the Dr, Martin Luther King Jr, holiday Monday..
