Musically, the two acts performing this month at SLG Art Boutiki as part of the San Jose Jazz Winter Fest are pretty far apart. One thing that connects Knower and La Misa Negra, though, is the strong roles played by the women in the band. Knower, a Los Angeles-based duo, plays funky electronic jazz. For their San Jose gig, Singer Genevieve Artadi and drummer Louis Cole will be joined by Dennis Hamm on keyboards, Sam Gendel on saxophone and Sam Wilkes on bass. The gig is part of a tour that has already seen Knower cross the country for shows in the past month and will have the band touring Europe from mid-March to early April.

“It’s going to be insane,” Artadi says, adding that she and Cole pointe shoes walmart will perform as a duo for some shows, “We like doing the duo show because we synch insane animations of dancing pizzas and our heads getting blown up in space to the music.”, La Misa Negra is planning its first U.S, tour this summer; the Oakland-based band has developed a Bay Area following since it formed in 2011, Founder Marco Polo Santiago serves as guitarist, composer and accordion player for the seven-piece band, which is known for its high-energy Latin-infused dance music..

“The main job of the band is to make people move,” Santiago says, although some of the songs he and lead singer Diana Trujillo write have lyrics with political or social gravitas. “Our audience in the Bay Area is about 50 percent Latin,” Santiago says. “If people understand the (Spanish) lyrics, they get a little something extra.”. In addition to Trujillo, La Misa Negra features two other female musicians: sax and clarinet player Morgan Nilsen and percussionist Elena De Troya. Santiago says it was important to him that the women in the band were more than eye candy.

“I don’t know if it draws a wider audience,” he says, “but it gives them another layer to care about, It connects with them a little more (to have) a strong female presence.”, La Misa Negra’s Feb, 17 gig at SLG Art Boutiki marks the first time the band has played a San Jose Jazz event, “We’ve been looking forward to getting into it for a few years now,” Santiago says, adding that his band’s blend of Afro-Latin sounds with hip-hop, jazz and rock are a good fit with San Jose Jazz’s programming, “They go beyond pointe shoes walmart the typical scope of jazz; it’s a multi-genre festival.”..

Knower’s influences include artists from Prince to Miles Davis to Sarah Vaughn. The band has collaborated with wide-ranging bands like Pomplamoose and Snarky Puppy. Artadi says being based in LA has helped Knower develop its own distinct sound. “It’s easy to distance yourself from anyone who tries to tell you how you should do your music,” she adds. La Misa Negra plays its Winter Fest gig on Feb. 17; Knower takes the stage Feb. 23. Both shows are at 8 p.m. at SLG Art Boutiki, 44 Race St., San Jose.

Lee Ann Womack is one of country music’s best artists. And that’s been true, really, for a couple of decades now, Her very first album, a self-titled affair released in 1997, was a platinum-selling smash that produced four Top 40 hits — including pointe shoes walmart the high-lonesome lament “Never Again, Again.”, A few years later, Womack delivered her greatest commercial triumph — 2000’s “I Hope You Dance” — which topped the country album charts on its way to triple-platinum sales, The title track was also a platinum-selling single, which nabbed several big awards and nominations..

For Paul Stanley, it was never sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll during the 40-plus years of prancing on stage in face makeup as one-fourth of the iconic band KISS. Well, not entirely. “For me it was ‘You keep the drugs, I’ll keep the rest,’” Stanley said. Beer? A whole different ballgame, especially when it comes to investing. Beer and food, actually. And music. Which is why Stanley and KISS colleague Gene Simmons took the plunge into “Rock & Brews” in 2012. Six years later, there are 20-plus locations of the “rock-inspired restaurant” with 50 on the drawing board, and a Tuesday ribbon-cutting in Vacaville with Stanley and dignitaries appearing at the Vacaville Commons Shopping Center site.

“Conceptually, it made so much sense,” Stanley said of the investment, It’s far more than merely lending his familiar name and face to a product, Stanley said, “Unless I’m excited and can be hands-on, I have no desire to be part of anything,” he said, “I don’t want something (negative) run with my name and then have to explain or tap dance around something that isn’t done properly.”, Financially, it was worth the risk, added Stanley, obviously comfortable from not only all that is pointe shoes walmart KISS, but his guitar art design business and paintings which have flourished, There’s also his successful six-month run in the lead role of “Phantom of the Opera” in Toronto and a best selling 2014 autobiography, “Face the Music: A Life Exposed.”..
