It was a pleasure listening to new music in 2017. So many artists — from Kendrick Lamar and Khalid to Lana Del Rey and Lorde — released great albums over the last 12 months. Thus, it was no problem finding candidates to fill my year-end Top 10 list. Indeed, the hard part was narrowing down the list to just 10. (That’s why I included some honorable mentions at the bottom). But tough choices must be made. Here are the Top 10 albums of 2017. 1. “Melodrama,” Lorde: It hasn’t been anywhere close to the commercial (or cultural) juggernaut of her last album, “Pure Heroine,” which, simply put, ranks among the most impressive debuts in pop music history. Yet, “Melodrama” is a worthy successor, a document of a young artist coming to terms with the kind of success that has placed her among the most famous women on the planet. Majesty and intrigue are in no short supply, as she whisks listeners through one magnetic pop offering after another. Again, this record might not have lived up to commercial expectations (although, that could change if it ends up winning the Grammy for album of the year). But I expect its stature to grow throughout the years, to the point where it’s one day commonly referred to as a masterpiece.

Key tracks: “Green Light,” “Liability” (aka, my favorite song of the year), 2, “DAMN.,” Kendrick Lamar: Lamar isn’t just on top of his game — he’s on top of the overall hip-hop game, basically miles ahead of everyone else, on his fourth full-length release, His rhymes seem otherworldly, yet, somehow, still grounded in what’s happening today, His delivery is breathtaking, yet never for mere show, And his grooves, beats and samples could stand on their own, even if white ballet shoes toddler Lamar never spit a single syllable into the microphone, Following his past triumphs, “DAMN.” serves as the exclamation point to what so many now hold true: Kendrick Lamar is the most important hip-hop artist of the decade..

Key tracks: “Humble,” “Loyalty.”. 3. “American Teen,” Khalid: The best soul platter of the year comes courtesy of this 19-year-old Georgia native, who is in the early stages of what should be a very long and successful career. Everything about this set feels so authentic — and nearly effortless — as Khalid spins one memorable coming-of-age tale after another. And you don’t have to be a teen — American or otherwise — to identify with these seemingly timeless tunes, which owe much to classic R&B. Everything here sparkles, yet “Young Dumb & Broke” is the jam that truly demands the spotlight.

Key tracks: “American Teen,” “Young Dumb & Broke.”, 4, “Masseduction,” St, Vincent: St, Vincent’s self-titled fourth studio outing white ballet shoes toddler was a breakthrough effort, earning a spot on numerous best-of-2014 lists and nabbing a Grammy as the top alternative music album, “Masseduction,” however, is even better, It’s still artsy and eclectic, in the fashion that we’ve come to expect from St, Vincent (aka Annie Clark), But it’s also her most accessible — and, indeed, most wholly satisfying — batch of songs to date..

Key tracks: “Happy Birthday, Johnny,” “Pills.”. 5. “Reputation,” Taylor Swift: The pop princess does her best Britney Spears impersonation on this high-gloss collection of radio-friendly numbers, ranging from me-against-the-world manifestos to crazy-in-love songs to sexy, sleek dance numbers. And she’s good at all of it. Even at her most overly dramatic (“Look What You Made Me Do”), Swift is still nothing short of fascinating to behold. Get ready for this album to dominate throughout 2018, given that there’s probably a dozen potential hit singles on it.

Key tracks: “New Year’s Day,” “ … Ready For It?”, 6, “One-Way Conversations,” Hollyn: It’s a remarkable debut for the 20-year-old vocalist, who many will remember for competing on season 12 of “American Idol” in 2013, The Ohio native is blessed with a beautiful voice and she puts it to excellent use on this sparkling collection of sophisticated pop tunes that address issues of faith and love with deep conviction, She should be a force in contemporary Christian music (CCM) for years white ballet shoes toddler to come, Give Hollyn 3 ½ minutes of your time — by listening to the song “In Awe” — and see if you don’t agree with my assessment of her potential..

Key tracks: “In Awe,” “Can’t Live Without.”. 7. “Swear I’m Good at This,” Diet Cig: I just love this slightly boastful title. But you don’t have to just take their word on it. I wholeheartedly concur with their self-assessment — this New York duo (vocalist-guitarist Alex Luciano and drummer Noah Bowman) is quite good on its debut outing, which is filled with the kind of addictive punk-pop gems that will leave you aching for more. Key tracks: “Maid of the Mist,” “Sixteen.”.

8, “Lust For Life,” Lana Del Rey: There is a delicious sense of Old Hollywood that runs through this dreamy collection, as if the author is pitching a script she wrote for James Dean, It’s world weary, yet hopeful, And it’s fueled equally with love and lust, which is a nearly unbeatable combination in Del Rey’s hands, Key tracks: “13 Beaches,” “White Mustang.”, 9, “A Deeper Understanding,” The War on Drugs: There is an Explosions in the Sky expansiveness to The War on Drugs’ fourth studio album, white ballet shoes toddler but one centered on solid Mark Knopfler-style songcraft, It’s also my favorite guitar record of the year, so fret fans take note..
