Singing jazz is a joyful experience for Emma Callister Walmsley. But her show at Angelica’s in Redwood City on Feb. 16 will have a bittersweet flavor. The next morning, she’ll be flying back to her native England for her grandmother’s memorial service. “I sing a lot of songs from her era, so I think of her a lot when I’m singing. So this show will probably be a little more poignant, in that respect. She lived to the grand old age of 96. She had a good life and a peaceful passing,” Callister Walmsley says. “So you can’t really ask for more, I guess.”.

She was cast in a musical set undersea — British composer Cecilia McDowall’s “Deep Waters” — in which her character was a jazz-singing fish, Tina Tuna. “I was chosen because my voice sounded natural in that role and I could bend the notes, I guess. My voice is almost a bit smoky, and it just suited that older, more traditional style. That was the first jazz I ever sang. And I really enjoyed it. It felt comfortable. It was so different from singing classical. Jazz gives you so much more freedom.

The big band played in hotel resorts around the world. “A whole avenue just opened up for me,” she says. “It was fantastic.”. Callister Walmsley even managed bands for a while, while she studied for her Master’s degree and Ph.D. in theology. And through the music, she met her husband, Philip Walmsley, who was the guitarist in the university’s other big band. The two bands would tour together once a year.
