Callister Walmsley, whose favorite vocalist is Sarah Vaughan, is also making an impact with her own supple, warm, expressive voice. The hardest part about transitioning from England to the Bay Area, apart from missing family, was trying to establish a new network of musician connections. Callister Walmsley took a large leap forward when she became a vocalist for SFJAZZ’s Big Band for a year. Through that experience, she met singer Gabrielle Cavassa, who took her under her wing and introduced her to many musicians, including a current member of Callister Walmsley’s quartet,  bassist Alex Farrell.

They will be joined at Angelica’s by pianist Daniel Markowitz and drummer Michael Howard, Howard was the drummer in Callister Walmsley’s university big band, He had, coincidentally, moved from the U.K, to the Bay Area to get his MBA at Stanford, Their current set includes such Great American Songbook ballads as Cole Porter’s haunting “Miss Otis balera toddler ballet shoes Regrets” and Gershwin’s “I Loves You, Porgy.”, With her group, Callister Walmsley, who plans to record an album in the near future, brings out the full emotional range of all her material..

“The wonderful thing about jazz is, it’s different, every time you do a tune. It’s a joy playing with such talented musicians. They give you something to delight your ears, every time.”. The audience was the big winner at Children’s Musical Theater San Jose’s 26th annual Cabaret Night gala on Saturday at the City National Civic. More than 500 people attended the Monopoly-themed fundraiser, which showcased dozens of CMT alums and current actors performing pieces from the company’s past and future shows. And while there was plenty of applause for actors who came from far and wide to perform — alum Josh Miyaji referred to it as their version of a high school, college and family reunion wrapped up into one night — the biggest cheers probably went to 12-year-old Matthew Dean. The San Jose boy wowed the crowd with an acrobatic dance display from “Electricity,” one of the hits from “Billy Elliot The Musical.”.

CMT Artistic Director Kevin Hauge told me he was thrilled to bring back Dean, a trained ballet dancer who made his acting debut in the show in San Jose last year, He’s since gone on to perform the role in productions in Rhode Island and Phoenix, and he’ll next appear in Berkeley Playhouse’s Feb, 16-March 25 run of “Billy Elliot The Musical.”, The gala also featured a preview of CMT’s upcoming Marquee Productions run of “Sweeney Todd” (April 21-30) and honored Brian Bumb and the San Jose Flea balera toddler ballet shoes Market with its third annual Spotlight Award for their longtime support of the company..

SUPER SPOT: Serra High grad Tom Brady wasn’t the only local boy who had a strong performance during Sunday’s Super Bowl LI broadcast. San Jose actor Jeffrey Adams was featured in a commercial for Sutter Health, a regional spot that ran only in Northern California markets. The Bellarmine College Prep and Santa Clara University grad is actually having an MVP year of his own so far. He is nominated twice in the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards, as Principal Actor in a Musical for his work in both SF Playhouse productions of “City of Angels” and “She Loves Me.” With two of the five nominations in the category, his odds are certainly better than the Patriots’ were heading into the fourth quarter.

And the March 27 awards ceremony could be even sweeter for Adams as his girlfriend, Monique Hafen, is nominated for her roles in both those productions, too, LISTENING TO ‘LA MUERTE’: Teatro Visión Executive Director Leigh Henderson tells me she was very happy with the “community circles” the company held last week to inspire the creation of a new Dia de los Muertos play, “We had a wonderful balera toddler ballet shoes and successful weekend of story gathering,” she said, Teatro has added a third opportunity for the community to share their stories about people who live their lives to be at peace when “la muerte” comes and how the death of someone close can give life to something new, The free event will be at De Anza College’s Euphrat Museum of Art on Wednesday, starting at 6:30 p.m, You can read about the development of the new work online at www.teatrovision.org/newwork..
