Hindemith’s Violin Concerto was frequently played by leading violin soloists 50 years ago, but now is something of a rarity.  Soloist Arabella Steinbacher is a lovely young German violinist who has performed the Hindemith and many other 20th-century violin concertos, as well as those from the more familiar Classic and Romantic periods. Hindemith, born in 1895, learned the violin as a child and played as a teenager in dance bands and for musical comedy, then in a string quartet and the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra. He was conscripted into the German army in 1918, where he played the bass drum, formed a string quartet — and survived sentry duty. After the war ended, he wrote violin sonatas and toured Europe with a string quartet playing viola before emerging as a prominent German composer.  In the mid-1930s, one of his violin sonatas displeased the Nazi regime, and in 1938, he fled to Switzerland.
