It’s just that kind of cognitive dissonance that inspired local stage ensemble Mugwumpin’s latest collaboratively developed theater piece, “In Event of Moon Disaster.”. “One of our company members, Soren Santos, had been obsessed with this little-known speech that is publicly available, which is the speech Nixon would have read if the Apollo 11 astronauts had died on the moon,” says Mugwumpin artistic director Natalie Greene. “And it’s beautiful and strange and sad and poetic. It felt very Mugwumpin to us, that it presented an alternate reality and that it touched on many different themes around space travel and heroism and what could have been.”.
The 14-year-old ensemble likes to explore key themes as a group and let the narrative take shape around them, “Early on in our first workshop we identified three themes of interest,” Greene says, “One thing that came up quickly was the ethics of space travel, about NASA and other government endeavors investing a lot of money in sending people off the earth when there’s a lot of poverty and suffering here on earth, hush puppies chaste ballet flat black leather Pretty quickly some heated debates emerged in our rehearsals and our investigations, because some of the research that happens in space has allowed for the technological advances that we benefit from on Earth.”..
