But every year tends to sell out, and with all the talk of closing, Friday’s event, which runs from 11 a.m. to midnight, may be packed tighter than an Irish wake.
The March 17 festival is the climax of a week’s worth of events at C.B, Hannegan’s, which included a harp concert, whiskey tasting, a liar’s dice tournament and lots of music, It’s scheduled to run from 11 a.m, to midnight, with a “happy birthday” toast to Chris Benson, whose birthday is the 18th, to end the night, The entertainment includes Hannegan’s Home-Boy Bag Pipers, who will be playing throughout the day; Richard Katz and the Irish All-Stars and Sam Roy and the Beach Cowboys on the patio stage, and Irish dance and more music — including Jim Manganello and the Work House Poets and the Billy James shoes for yoga Blues Band — on the main stage..
In a town like Los Gatos, where craft cocktails are the norm at newer establishments, C.B. Hannegan’s is one of a dwindling crowd of places that are throwbacks to a much different era. The taps at Hannegan’s have made room for craft beers, but Harp and Guinness retain their sacred spots and many just opt for a Coors Light. Mixed drinks are poured with a free hand by the bartenders, who were dressing in green aprons with white shirts long before such a uniform came back into style. The bar is packed with bottles, including several varieties of Irish whiskey. But this isn’t a bar where your drink will have a half-dozen ingredients, with locally sourced herbs and a few droplets of rare bitters. If you’re looking for something local, there’s always Testarossa chardonnay or maybe a Loma Prieta viognier. Besides, it’s really the crowd and atmosphere — and the mouth-watering barbecue dishes — that draw people to C.B. Hannegan’s.
You get such a sense of history from the moment you walk beneath the green awning over the front door, A swordfish trophy hangs over the kitchen, surrounded by framed photos of fishing expeditions from days gone by, The dining room tables, covered with green tablecloths, sit waiting for customers while the bar — raised a half-story above the rest — is usually filled from happy hour on, The ceiling is decorated with mirrored bar signs and framed memorabilia — you can bet the white jerseys with the names Rice and Young emblazoned on the back have been there since the 49ers heyday in the late 1980s, How can you not love a place that has the head of a “jackalope” shoes for yoga mounted beneath a neon sign for Jameson’s Irish Whiskey?..
The walls are lined with photographs of customers over the years, and the TVs — usually showing a variety of sports — almost blend into the bric-a-brac covering the walls. Hannegan’s — few people come in alone and those who do usually end up striking a conversation with somebody. “There’s not too many places that have been open under the same ownership for that long,” said Harold Martin, a popular bartender at Grill 57 in Los Gatos. His rock band, the Cruzers, will be playing on C.B. Hannegan’s main stage on St. Patrick’s Day. “It’s a real drinking establishment, and there are generations of Los Gatos people who have been going there. I know kids — I mean, they were kids when I first met them — and now they’re working there.”.
