BERKELEY — A powwow on Saturday in celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day has been canceled because of the East Bay-wide air pollution generated by fires raging in Napa and Sonoma counties, “It is with sorrow and deep regret that the Indigenous Peoples Day Planning Committee has pointe shoe brands for wide feet decided to cancel this year’s powwow on Saturday, October 14, 2017 in downtown Berkeley at Civic Center Park,” the committee’s coordinator, Gino Barichello, said in a press release Friday, “The poor quality of breathable air in Berkeley caused by northern wildfires has made us realize that the health of our community overrides the desire for celebration at this moment in time.”..
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those families that have experienced loss attributable to the wildfires in the Northern San Francisco Bay Area,” Barichello added. The canceled powwow and Indian market had been scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park on Oct. 14 to mark the silver anniversary of Indigenous Peoples Day. The festivities were supposed to include a dance exhibition by Native California and Aztec dancers, as well as a contest dancing, intertribal dancing, a giveaway, and honor songs. There also was supposed to be Native American foods, arts and crafts, celebrations of American Indian culture, and a “Prettiest Shawl” contest.
