In the early 1980s, when the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art approached Lucinda Childs about creating a site-specific dance for its cavernous downtown industrial space known as the Temporary Contemporary, she already had a two-decade track record as a pioneering choreographer. For her collaborators she chose maverick Los Angeles architect Frank O. Gehry for the stage design, then widely respected but not yet the Pritzker Prize-winning icon he would become with the completion of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and a wildcard composer from the Bay Area named John Adams. The strikingly beautiful collaboration “Available Light,” which premiered in 1983, helped put Adams on the map with his sweeping electronic composition “Light Over Water.”.
